DIY overhead kitchen rack

In my latest DIY project, I've set out to build one of those fancy overhead kitchen racks you see in high-end kitchens. Except this one needs to fit in my tiny little rental kitchen, and do as little damage to the ceiling as possible.

Now it's about impossible to hang something this size from a ceiling without doing some damage, but I think my choice of 1/4" screw in hooks was a good choice.

The frame itself is made of 2x3 studs for the main structure and various sizes of pine planks from Home Depot as cross-braces and a nicer-looking wrap around the outside. The total cost of the lumber was about $16, and the hardware was about another $15.

The rods are just $5 1/4" steel rods from Home Depot. If I did it again I would probably use flat strap steel mounted vertically instead, because the rods turned out to not be strong enough to span 4 feet with weight on them.

The fix was just a new crosspiece perpendicular to them in the middle, with holes drilled for hooks to mount and support the rods in the middle. It works, but I wish it wasn't there.

The total cost so far is about $40, which is pretty spectactular compared to what I would pay for a contractor to build one of these.

It isn't finished yet, I have to decide if I want to put a wood finish on it or paint it red to match the cabinets on the other side of the kitchen.
